There are a bunch of books that changed my life. Noam Chomsky's Manufacturing Consent was a big one. Kurt Vonnegut's Galapagos was the right book at the right time for me at one point. Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse has its flaws, but there was wisdom contained within. There are a bunch more, but I can't think of them all right now.
Books that changed many other lives but that I hated would make for a funny list. Ayn Rand, please answer the white courtesy phone.
The nice thing about this question is that it makes me look more erudite than I really am. I keep all of the books that I keep meaning to read but haven't yet started on my nightstand.
